Which women’s wrestling weight classes apply to your event?

By the Smart Wrestler team · Written from hosting and scoring the events this software runs · Updated 2026-10-19

Women’s wrestling weight classes differ by school, college and international competition. Compare the lists, units and division checks before entering.

Quick answer

Women’s wrestling does not use one weight list at every level. NFHS girls’ high-school competition offers state-selected 12-, 13- or 14-class lists in pounds. Senior international women’s freestyle has ten UWW classes in kilograms, with six used for Olympic competition. USA Wrestling youth divisions have separate age-based lists, and a college event must identify its governing competition rules. Start with the event’s level and division, then check the official list and units. A similar-looking number on another chart is not an interchangeable entry category.

Olympic categories50, 53, 57, 62, 68, 76Six categories, also identified for Olympic qualifying.

The gap between 53 and 57 in the Olympic row is intentional. A wrestler competing at 55 kg in a non-Olympic senior event has not entered an Olympic 55 kg class. Check the actual championship program before comparing results across the two lists. The Olympic list describes categories, not which athlete has qualified or been selected.

A state selects an option for its competitions. Notice that 125 appears in the fourteen-class list while 124 appears in the thirteen-class list. Do not change an entry simply because the numbers are close. Follow the school’s adopted list, its current-season weight-management requirements and the competition’s weighing instructions.

The NCAA women’s 2026–27 competition book publishes the ten pound categories above. A 117-pound college entry is therefore not the same label as a 57-kilogram international entry, and the college list does not simply reproduce the girls’ high-school options. Use the event’s collegiate association and current packet before assuming another college organization shares the same categories.

For children, select the current USA Wrestling girls’ age division or the league’s own girls’ division. A high-school freshman might be eligible by age for another kind of event, but the event’s complete eligibility conditions still apply. A club coach should record which chart was used alongside the entered class, especially when the team attends both school and spring freestyle meets.

For domestic birth-year bands and the full chart, use USA Wrestling weight classes.

Keep the original unit visible on a roster and any printed work sheet. Converting a number for conversation does not create an authorized category or a weigh-in allowance. The official scale reading, minimum-weight eligibility and entered category are separate facts. Ask the organizer to correct a wrong-unit entry before brackets are generated, rather than changing a saved weight preset after competition begins.

What should a coach put on the final division checklist?

  1. Name the governing organization, season and event.
  2. Record the complete division label and original weight unit.
  3. Compare the entered class with that exact published list.
  4. Resolve certification, membership and weighing requirements separately.
  5. Check the roster again after the host publishes divisions or brackets.

Smart Wrestler can save reusable weight presets for event setup, but the name of a preset does not certify its contents. A host running both school and international-style sessions should give each preset a clear division and unit label. Families should use the host’s published category rather than infer it from a generic search result.
