What are the Olympic wrestling weight classes?

By the Smart Wrestler team · Written from hosting and scoring the events this software runs · Updated 2026-10-19

Olympic wrestling has six weight classes per style. Compare men’s freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle in kilograms, with pounds for orientation.

Quick answer

Olympic wrestling uses six weight classes in each of three competitions: men’s freestyle, men’s Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle. Under the January 2026 UWW rules, men’s freestyle runs from 57 to 125 kg, Greco-Roman from 60 to 130 kg, and women’s freestyle from 50 to 76 kg. These are the Olympic subsets, not every senior World Championship category. Use kilograms for the official category; a rounded pounds conversion only helps readers understand its size. Qualification and athlete selection are separate from the weight list.

Read down one column. Reading across a row does not mean those categories compete with one another. Freestyle and Greco-Roman are separate draws with different permitted actions, and women’s freestyle is its own competition. There are eighteen style-and-weight combinations in this table, even though some numbers appear more than once.

The one-decimal conversions are not alternative weigh-in limits. For example, 74 kg is the official category; “163 pounds” is only an informal description. Rounding down or up does not authorize a different scale reading. An entry form and official results should preserve the kilogram label even if a US audience prefers a pounds explanation.

Why do the World Championships have other weight classes?

UWW’s full senior lists include ten categories per style. Non-Olympic men’s freestyle categories include 61, 70, 79 and 92 kg. The corresponding extra Greco-Roman categories are 55, 63, 72 and 82 kg; the extra women’s categories are 55, 59, 65 and 72 kg. An athlete can therefore be a senior world competitor in a weight absent from the Olympic program.

That difference explains why results from two championships can look inconsistent without either being wrong. Identify the event and year before assuming a missing Olympic weight was removed from all international wrestling. Junior and cadet age-group charts introduce another distinction: they are not simply the Olympic table with younger athletes.

Is wrestling in the 2028 Olympics?

LA28 includes wrestling in its sports program. A sports-program listing and the UWW category table answer different questions: one confirms the sport, the other identifies the rulebook’s categories. Do not read this reference as a timetable of individual sessions, a ticket listing or a final start list. Those details should come from the organizer’s current program.

This page records the published categories checked on October 19, 2026. Before making entry or travel decisions for a future Games, compare the latest UWW rules, qualification system and organizer information. A medal won at a non-Olympic weight does not by itself establish a place at another category in a future Games.

How should a host label an Olympic-style local tournament?

A local freestyle or Greco-Roman event does not automatically use the Olympic weights. Many domestic competitions use age-based pound lists, and international-age divisions can have ten kilogram classes. Publish the actual division, style, chart year and units on the event page so families do not register from the phrase “Olympic style” alone.

For a fictional registration review, “16U boys, domestic freestyle, 2027” points to a different chart from “senior men, Olympic category, 74 kg.” Keep those labels with any saved Smart Wrestler preset. The software can organize the group, while the organizer remains responsible for selecting the authorized divisions and weighing instructions.

For the domestic counterpart, see USA Wrestling’s chart guide.
