Iowa wrestling weight classes

Iowa wrestling weight classes for boys and girls, with separate IHSAA and IGHSAU authority and different 2026–27 growth-allowance dates.
Quick answer
Iowa school wrestling uses fourteen boys’ weight classes from 106 through 285 pounds and fourteen girls’ classes from 100 through 235. Boys’ competition is administered by the Iowa High School Athletic Association, while girls’ competition is administered by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Their 2026–27 instructions have different growth-allowance dates, so do not apply one organization’s calendar to both rosters. Check the correct governing record and event date before entering a class; the published chart is not an individual eligibility decision.
Which IHSAA / IGHSAU weight classes are listed?
The IHSAA school rules framework and IGHSAU wrestling resources establish the separate lists. Boys’ and girls’ administrative instructions must also be read separately.
| Competition | Nominal classes |
|---|---|
| Boys high school | 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215, 285 |
| Girls high school | 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 155, 170, 190, 235 |
Why are there two governing sources for Iowa?
The Iowa IHSAA and IGHSAU administer different school competition programs. A family with athletes in both should expect separate season instructions rather than one universal Iowa wrestling packet. The abbreviation IHSAA can also lead to Indiana material, so retain the full state and organization name when sharing links.
An event host should identify the applicable program in the invitation. That avoids a coach applying a boys’ deadline, assessment instruction or growth date to a girls’ entry simply because both athletes attend the same school.
When do the 2026–27 growth allowances begin?
The boys’ IHSAA manual gives the two-pound growth allowance on January 1. IGHSAU’s April 9, 2026 season update gives December 14, 2026 for girls. Those different dates are an important practical reason to keep the programs’ records distinct.
An allowance changes the authorized limit under its rules; it does not turn an approved minimum into a lower class. The boys’ manual explicitly explains that an athlete with a 126 minimum class cannot use the allowance to become eligible for 120. Refer individual questions to the responsible school staff.
What is changing in girls’ team competition?
IGHSAU’s 2026–27 update describes the regional dual qualifying meet and state dual tournament, with the leading sixteen teams in each class considered for regional qualification and eight advancing to state. That is a team pathway alongside the individual championship structure.
A girls’ athlete’s weight class remains one part of the team lineup; the team’s qualification and the athlete’s entry still require their own checks. Do not infer a dual invitation from an individual ranking or assume that an individual championship itinerary covers the dual event.
How can a coach prepare an Iowa event roster?
- Identify IHSAA boys or IGHSAU girls and the specific event format.
- Use the matching fourteen-class sequence.
- Check the correct organization’s date and weight-management instructions.
- Review the official pre-meet record before submitting entries.
A Smart Wrestler host should publish the format and divisions before registration opens. Compare dual and individual events.
Give families the exact event name and check-in plan. If a class selection conflicts with the school record, resolve the existing entry through the coach rather than creating a duplicate. Clear program labels help families follow the right bracket and understand which calendar governs the next competition.
Frequently asked questions
Is 140 an Iowa school class?
It is in the girls’ list shown here. The boys’ fourteen-class sequence uses 138 and 144 around that range.
Do boys and girls receive the allowance on the same date?
The cited 2026–27 instructions differ: boys January 1, girls December 14, 2026.
Does IHSAA administer Iowa girls’ wrestling?
Girls’ school wrestling is administered by IGHSAU. Use that organization’s current instructions for the girls’ program.
Does a dual-team invitation establish every athlete’s class eligibility?
No. Team qualification and individual weight-management eligibility are separate checks.
