What are the AAU wrestling weight classes?

By the Smart Wrestler team · Written from hosting and scoring the events this software runs · Updated 2026-10-19

Read the official 2026 AAU wrestling weight chart, including youth divisions, Girls individual and team differences, age determination and heavyweight caps.

Quick answer

AAU wrestling weight classes depend on the division and event type. The official 2026 chart separates its general age-group table from Girls individual tournaments and Girls team duals. In the general table, the individual tournament director may use birth year or age on the event date, with the method published in the brochure. The Girls individual section uses age as of December 31 of the current year. Use the event’s named chart rather than importing a school, USA Wrestling or generic youth list.

19U: 2009 / 2008 / 2007 with stated school condition98, 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, 285

The 2007 birth-year note requires current high-school attendance or graduation in the current year, with proof. The chart also permits additional heavyweight subdivisions where specified. A maximum is a real limit, not a decorative label beside an unlimited class.

Why do Girls individual and dual entries need separate checks?

The Girls individual chart uses 6U, 8U, 11U, 14U and 19U youth bands, rather than simply reproducing the general table’s 10U, 12U and 16U bands. Girls duals use grade groupings for younger athletes. An eleven-year-old therefore cannot be placed correctly by copying the general 10U row and changing its label.

How should you resolve the age method?

Read the event brochure before assuming that a birthday during the season has no effect. The general table explicitly allows the director to choose the age method for individual championships. Save the brochure or written clarification with your entry records so families know why an athlete was assigned that band.

What is a useful registration check?

  1. Match AAU, season, competition type and division name.
  2. Apply the age method stated for that competition.
  3. Read the full weight row, including any HWT cap or school-status note.
  4. Confirm membership and weigh-in instructions separately.

A valid membership does not correct an incorrect age division. Likewise, a correct weight number does not establish that the athlete belongs in that event’s grade or birth-year category.

How can a host prevent the wrong chart reaching families?

Put the exact event type in the registration instructions and label each division completely. A bare “AAU weights” heading hides important distinctions. If the packet changes, contact affected entrants before making brackets.

When configuring a Smart Wrestler event, compare the offered selections against the published AAU packet. Do not silently substitute NFHS school weights because the athletes are school-aged. Keep chart validation and medical or competition eligibility decisions with the responsible governing officials.

Frequently asked questions

Are AAU and USA Wrestling weight classes interchangeable?

No. They are different organizations and publish different age and weight frameworks.

Does AAU always determine age by December 31?

The 2026 general chart allows the individual director’s published choice of birth-year or event-date method. The Girls individual section specifically uses December 31.

Is an AAU heavyweight class unlimited?

Several rows state explicit maximums, such as 205 pounds in the general 12U row. Read the complete row and event rules.

Is this a 2027 chart?

No. The cited AAU document is labeled 2026. Do not relabel its birth-year bands for a later season.
