Texas wrestling weight classes from the 2026–27 UIL manual: boys’ and girls’ lists, 5A/6A distinctions and the December 27 growth allowance.

Quick answer

Texas UIL wrestling uses fourteen boys’ classes from 106 through 285 pounds and fourteen girls’ classes from 100 through 235 in the 2026–27 manual. The 5A and 6A school conferences are separate from these bodyweight categories. UIL’s two-pound growth allowance begins December 27, but it does not replace the wrestler’s approved minimum and date eligibility. Read the correct boys’ or girls’ list and the current official school record before selecting an event entry.

Which UIL weight classes are listed?

The UIL regular-season manual states both lists. The numbers below are the named classes before a growth allowance or another authorized event-specific adjustment.

Do 5A and 6A use different bodyweight numbers?

School conference and weight class are separate labels. A family following a 5A athlete should choose the correct conference competition and then the athlete’s weight bracket. A 6A bracket with the same weight number is not automatically the right destination.

When building a team itinerary, write the conference and boys’ or girls’ designation beside the event. Those details help families select the correct sessions and results. Do not infer the entry from the school’s size or a similar tournament title in a search result.

What changes on December 27?

UIL’s manual grants the two-pound growth allowance beginning December 27. That changes the applicable scale limit under the rules, while the nominal bracket label remains the class name. The manual does not permit using the allowance to bypass the approved minimum class.

A host should communicate any authorized allowance separately from the list of categories. Renaming 120 as a new 122 class obscures the underlying competition. The school coach should compare the dated eligibility record with the announced limit before approving the athlete’s entry.

Why must boys’ and girls’ lists remain separate?

The girls’ list starts with 100, 105, 110 and 115, whereas the boys’ list starts with 106, 113, 120 and 126. Later categories differ too: girls include 140 and 145, while boys include 144 and 150. Both lists have fourteen numbers but cannot be combined into one interchangeable chart.

  1. Choose the correct conference and competition designation.
  2. Match the weight to the appropriate fourteen-class row.
  3. Check the school’s weight-assessment record and date.
  4. Confirm the event packet’s check-in and weigh-in requirements.

How should a Texas school and host resolve an entry conflict?

Have the coach confirm the approved entry before the host generates brackets. If a family selected a class from a club tournament, explain which UIL list applies rather than automatically moving the wrestler to the closest number. School and nonschool competitions can use different frameworks.

When Smart Wrestler supports the event, complete the division setup before inviting teams. Review the host guide.

Keep one athlete record and correct the existing entry through the authorized event process. A second registration can leave two conflicting brackets or payment records and makes it harder for the family to know which assignment is current.

Frequently asked questions

What is the highest Texas school weight class?

The nominal upper category is 285 for boys and 235 for girls in the 2026–27 UIL list.

Does 5A describe a wrestler’s weight?

No. It is a school conference designation. The bodyweight category is another part of the entry.

When does UIL’s growth allowance begin?

The cited manual states December 27. Check the complete current rule and athlete record rather than using the date as a shortcut to eligibility.

Does 120 become a different class after the allowance?

The named category remains 120. The authorized scale limit and the athlete’s eligibility are separate from the bracket label.
