What are the basic freestyle wrestling rules?

By the Smart Wrestler team · Written from hosting and scoring the events this software runs · Updated 2026-10-19

Freestyle wrestling uses exposure, action values and technical superiority. Understand senior timing, tied-score criteria and differences from folkstyle.

Quick answer

Freestyle wrestling permits attacks involving the legs and scores actions under UWW’s international point system. Wrestlers can win by a fall, technical superiority or the applicable points decision. Senior bouts use two three-minute periods with a thirty-second break; a ten-point lead is the technical-superiority threshold. An equal score is resolved by ordered criteria rather than automatically adding folkstyle overtime. Ordinary folkstyle escapes and riding time are not imported into this system. Domestic youth events can modify international procedures, so identify the event’s age division and adopted rules before scoring.

How does freestyle scoring differ from folkstyle?

Read the international action rather than transplanting a school label
TopicFreestyle contextFolkstyle assumption to avoid
Leg attacksPermitted subject to the rules.Confusing the style with Greco-Roman.
ExposureA recognized danger position can earn points.Requiring the school near-fall count for every turn.
EscapesNo ordinary one-point folkstyle escape award.Adding E1 whenever the wrestlers separate.
Riding timeNo NCAA men’s net-control-time point.Running a college riding-time clock.

The international point table considers the action and landing, including different values for different throws or exposures. A school crew cannot score it reliably by changing only the length of the match. It needs the event’s current point controls and the official’s indicated value.

Can you still pin in freestyle wrestling?

Yes. A fall is a match-ending victory under UWW rules; it is not replaced by the ten-point technical margin. A wrestler leading on points can still lose by a confirmed fall before another ending condition is completed. The public result should identify the actual finish, not convert every early ending into technical superiority.

For a fictional bout, A leads 8–2 and receives a recognized two-point action to reach 10–2. The lead is eight, so that score alone is below freestyle’s ten-point threshold. At 12–2 the difference is ten. The referee applies the required action-completion and end-of-bout procedure; a scorer should not confuse the winner’s total with the margin.

How are tied freestyle scores decided?

UWW equal-score comparison, apply in order
OrderCompareWhat it means
1Highest value of holds.A larger-value scoring action can take priority.
2Fewest cautions.Compare cautions if action-value criteria remain equal.
3Last technical point scored.Use only after the preceding criteria do not separate the wrestlers.

“Last point wins” is therefore incomplete. A 4–4 bout containing a four-point action on one side can have a different criteria outcome from a 4–4 bout composed of equivalent two-point actions. Preserve the action values and cautions so the final decision can be checked from the record, not reconstructed from the scoreboard total alone.

Are locked hands allowed in freestyle wrestling?

The folkstyle locked-hands restriction does not transfer wholesale into freestyle. International wrestling uses its own legal-hold and prohibited-action provisions, including restrictions that vary by age and style. A hold being permitted in one context does not authorize choking, dangerous pressure or an otherwise illegal application.

This is why an official should explain the event’s rule adaptations before a crew begins. A coach teaching a child an international turn must use appropriate supervised instruction and the adopted age restrictions. This article explains the scoring framework, not a tutorial for executing a hold.

What should a freestyle table crew verify in 2026?

  1. Use the January 2026 UWW book and the event’s domestic modifications.
  2. Check age group, period lengths and break timing.
  3. Record the official’s action values and cautions distinctly.
  4. Compare the score difference for technical superiority.
  5. Preserve the information needed for tied-score criteria and the final victory code.

USA Wrestling’s current domestic rulebook is labeled 2027 and includes local modifications. A host should name the intended edition rather than assume that a school folkstyle setup is suitable. In Smart Wrestler, rehearse the selected international style with the referee and confirm the same points appear on the spectator display.

For individual action values in a focused table, use freestyle scoring.

Frequently asked questions

What is not allowed in freestyle wrestling?

UWW prohibits illegal and dangerous holds and other violations. Domestic youth modifications can impose additional restrictions.

Can you still pin in freestyle wrestling?

Yes. A confirmed fall ends the bout under the applicable UWW procedure.

Are you allowed to lock hands in freestyle?

The folkstyle restriction does not apply wholesale; the specific hold must still satisfy UWW and age-specific legality rules.

Does a tied freestyle score mean overtime?

Not automatically. UWW uses ordered criteria, including action value, cautions and then the last technical point.
