Is putting a hand on the face illegal in wrestling?

By the Smart Wrestler team · Written from hosting and scoring the events this software runs · Updated 2026-10-20

Placing a hand on an opponent’s eyes, nose or mouth is illegal in NCAA folkstyle. See the rule, the finger-grasp limit and the UWW face-contact line.

Quick answer

Yes. The NCAA men’s rules book makes it illegal to deliberately place a hand on, in or around the opponent’s eyes, nose or mouth. UWW rules forbid touching the face between the eyebrows and the line of the mouth. A separate NCAA provision lets a wrestler grasp all four fingers to break a hold, but pulling back the thumb or one, two or three fingers is illegal. Accidental contact is judged by whether it was deliberate.

What does the NCAA rule say?

The illegal-holds section states in Article 12 that it is illegal to deliberately place the hand or hands in, on or around the eyes, nose or mouth of the opponent. An appendix note on a legal hold adds a reminder about not placing the hands in or around the eyes, nose and mouth.

The word “deliberately” matters. Hands move quickly in a scramble, and the referee decides whether contact was intended.

How do fingers fit in?

The next article says wrestlers may grasp all four fingers in an effort to break a hold, but pulling back the thumb or one, two or three fingers is illegal. The distinction is whether the grip forces a joint, not whether fingers are touched.

What do international rules say?

UWW Article 47 lists general prohibitions including to touch the opponent’s face between the eyebrows and the line of the mouth, to twist fingers or toes, and to grasp or interlock fingers to block the opponent and prevent active wrestling. The article says these are sanctioned based on severity, from a verbal warning to disqualification.

The activity side is covered under passivity. Read passivity.

What happens when a referee sees it?

The NCAA book requires illegal holds to be prevented where possible and penalized when they cannot be, with penalty points awarded to the opponent in addition to points earned. Intentional acts can also be treated as unnecessary roughness or flagrant misconduct.

The most serious penalty is explained separately. Read flagrant misconduct.

How should coaches and parents respond?

Coaches should teach partners to keep hands off the face in drilling. Parents who see an eye poke should note the time and let the officials act.

Smart Wrestler records penalty points the table enters; whether contact was deliberate is the referee’s decision.

A practical rule for practice rooms is to keep the hands off the face entirely and use the shoulder, chest or forearm to control the head and neck within the legal limits. Partners should stop immediately when contact near the eyes or mouth happens by accident, since a quick reset prevents the same contact from looking deliberate the second time. Officials look at intent, position and result together, so a wrestler who reaches across the face while clearly controlling a head is judged differently from one who pushes a hand into the eyes.
