Alabama wrestling weight classes from the 2026–27 AHSAA book, including girls’ 12-class adoption, junior-high lists and the state’s growth-allowance wording.

Quick answer

Alabama’s 2026–27 AHSAA wrestling publication lists fourteen boys’ high-school classes from 106 to 285 pounds and twelve girls’ high-school classes from 100 to 235. It separately prints junior-high and middle-school lists for boys and girls. Do not apply one level’s numbers to another. Alabama’s growth-allowance wording also has its own minimum-weight provision, so eligibility must be checked against the actual AHSAA record rather than inferred from a generic national summary or another state’s example.

Which AHSAA weight classes are listed?

The current AHSAA wrestling publication prints all four school lists. The table uses nominal pounds and keeps the junior-high categories separate from high school.

What changes at junior-high and middle-school level?

The AHSAA boys’ younger-level list has fifteen categories and starts at 85, while the girls’ younger-level list has twelve and begins at 85 and 93. These are not copies of the high-school sequences. A combined school event needs clear level labels to prevent an athlete reaching the wrong bracket.

For a school entering both levels, review the younger roster independently. A shared spreadsheet column called “weight” can hide whether 140 refers to a permitted younger-level category or an unsupported high-school selection. Keep the competition level beside the number in every working list.

Why must Alabama’s growth rule be read directly?

The publication gives a two-pound allowance after December 25 and includes specific wording permitting its use in minimum-class eligibility, with an example. That differs from summaries for states whose rules prohibit using an allowance to reach a lower minimum class.

Do not apply that example outside Alabama or make a participation decision from this paragraph alone. The responsible school staff must check the full AHSAA provision, approved minimum and date. This is a good example of why state-specific documentation matters even when several states share the same nominal fourteen-class boys’ list.

What records support an Alabama weigh-in?

The current publication requires coaches to present the date’s pre-match weigh-in form to the host. The form is generated through the designated school weight-management process and supports the athlete’s permitted classes on that date. A family’s entry selection is a different administrative record.

  1. Choose the school level and boys’ or girls’ competition.
  2. Check the appropriate list in the current publication.
  3. Review the official pre-match form for the actual date.
  4. Confirm any allowance under the Alabama provision rather than another state’s rule.

How can an Alabama host make registration clearer?

Offer separate divisions for the intended levels and publish the applicable packet before families pay. Review any configured preset against all four lists if the event accepts both high-school and younger athletes. Do not assume that a preset named “school wrestling” resolves the level distinction.

Smart Wrestler hosts should check divisions before opening the event to teams. Read the host guide.

When a roster contains an unexpected number, ask the school which level and approved class it intends. Treat the question as a record review rather than an instruction for an athlete to change weight. Resolve it before publishing match assignments.

Frequently asked questions

What are Alabama’s girls’ high-school classes?

The current publication lists twelve from 100 to 235. The full sequence appears in the high-school row above.

Are junior-high boys’ classes the same as varsity?

No. The younger boys’ list starts at 85 and has fifteen categories; varsity begins at 106 and has fourteen.

Does every state apply the growth allowance identically?

No. Alabama’s publication contains its own minimum-class wording and example. Use the complete state provision and the athlete’s official record.

Does a registration selection replace the pre-match form?

No. The date-specific school form supports eligibility; registration records the intended event entry.
