What are the wrestling uniform rules?

By the Smart Wrestler team · Written from hosting and scoring the events this software runs · Updated 2026-10-19

Compare NCAA men’s uniform rules with the NFHS Rule 4-1 text and 2026–27 fit guidance: singlet cut, shorts, shoes, ear guards, jewelry and penalties.

Quick answer

Wrestling uniform rules specify the singlet or two-piece option, shoes, ear protection and what may be worn under or on top. The NCAA men’s book allows a one-piece singlet with a minimum 4-inch inseam or a form-fitting top and shorts, bans jewelry and requires ear guards for live wrestling. The NFHS page reproduces older Rule 4-1 text, and its 2026–27 points of emphasis stress full range of motion and a secure fit.

What must a competition uniform look like under the NCAA men’s book?

The book accepts two uniforms. A singlet is one piece, may be worn with or without full-length tights, is not cut away lower than the armpit on the upper torso and not lower than halfway between the armpit and belt line under the arms, and has a minimum inseam of 4 inches without extending beyond the top of the knees. The alternative is a form-fitting top and shorts.

Institution name or initials must appear with letters at least 2 inches high, and teams must wear identical competition uniforms in duals and in each tournament session, except in open tournaments.

What equipment is required, optional or banned?

  • Shoes: light, heelless, above the ankle and tightly secured.
  • Ear protection: worn anytime live wrestling takes place, with no tape or decals, and with an adjustable locking device.
  • Jewelry: none during competition.
  • Hair: free of oils; solid, non-abrasive coverings are allowed as part of or under the ear guard.
  • Special equipment such as pads and braces: barred if it prevents normal joint movement or is excessively loose.

In tournaments the host provides red and green ankle bands about 3 inches wide so the wrestlers can be identified. The book also allows an upper-body undergarment only if the referee finds sufficient reason, and then only a form-fitting, short-sleeved, unadorned T-shirt.

What does the NFHS text say?

The NFHS page checked for this page reproduces Rule 4, Section 1 and is dated January 3, 2017, with no season stated. It describes a one-piece singlet cut no lower than the armpits, a bottom with a minimum 4-inch inseam, an undershirt allowed only with sufficient reason, manufacturer logo limits of 2¼ square inches, one American flag up to 2 by 3 inches, light heelless shoes and a rigid padded ear guard with a locking device.

Because that page is older than the current season, school hosts should confirm each point in the current NFHS rules book and their state association manual before ruling on a uniform.

What do the 2026–27 NFHS points of emphasis add?

The 2026–27 points of emphasis include properly fitted uniforms for female wrestlers. They say uniforms shall be worn in a manner that allows full range of motion and should stay secure without frequent adjustment, that ill-fitting uniforms can cause distraction and safety concerns, and that schools, parents and coaches should ensure access to a range of sizes and appropriate options, including legal undergarments.

The page does not give further undergarment or sizing detail, so it complements rather than replaces the rules text.

Who enforces the rules and what happens on a violation?

The NCAA book gives the referee authority to decide the legality of mat markings, uniforms, equipment and appearance. When a wrestler is ready to wrestle but out of compliance, the wrestler is charged a nonbleeding injury timeout, the injury clock starts and runs until compliance, and the time is cumulative with the 1½ minutes of allowed injury time and counts as the first timeout. The opponent receives starting position choice, and a wrestler who is not compliant at the end of 1½ minutes is disqualified from that match.

Hosts can lower the risk by posting the uniform rules with the weigh-in schedule so families see them before the first match.

Weigh-in and check-in preparation is covered in the weigh-in guide. Read weigh-in rules.

Smart Wrestler’s event tools record check-in and weigh-in results the host enters. They do not inspect uniforms; the referee does.
