Montana wrestling weight classes

Montana wrestling weight classes from the MHSA 2026–27 approved list: fourteen boys’ and fourteen girls’ classes, plus state tournament divisions.
Quick answer
Montana’s MHSA publishes a two-line 2026–27 approved list: fourteen NFHS girls’ classes from 100 to 235 pounds and fourteen NFHS boys’ classes from 106 to 285. The state tournament has boys’ divisions AA, A and B/C and one girls’ bracket, with the 2027 event scheduled for February 18 to 20 in Billings. The MHSA’s own pages do not explain its paired draw labels such as 100/103, so this page reports them without guessing their meaning.
Which MHSA weight classes are approved for 2026–27?
The Montana High School Association links a one-page document titled “Wrestling Weight Class for 2026-2027” from its wrestling rules page. It names both lists as NFHS classes.
| Competition | Classes | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Girls’ wrestling | 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 155, 170, 190, 235 | 14 |
| Boys’ wrestling | 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215, 285 | 14 |
Both lists are the fourteen-class NFHS options, the same sets used in several neighboring states.
How is the Montana state tournament organized?
The MHSA’s postseason page, headed 2027 All Class State Wrestling Tournament, gives February 18 to 20, 2027 at MetraPark in Billings. Boys compete in Class AA, Class A and Class B/C, and girls compete in one state bracket.
As with other states, the class a school belongs to is separate from the bodyweight class. A bracket label combines both facts.
Because the schedule names both a school class and a weight, record both when you save a bracket link. A bracket called 150 does not say which class it belongs to, and the girls’ bracket is a separate single bracket.
What are the paired labels like 100/103?
The postseason page says that, by random draw, the championship round will start at the 170/190 pound weight class in 2026 and all other rounds will start with the 100/103 pound weight class. The page does not say what the slash means or which weights are combined.
Because the association does not define the labels on those pages, a family should not assume the two numbers are one bracket or two. Ask the host or the MHSA which weights each label covers before planning travel around a start time.
What other MHSA documents affect wrestling weights?
The rules page also links a scale-certification service agencies list, whose file name dates it to February 2024, and the 2026–27 NFHS rule changes and points of emphasis. The page does not state weight-management, body-fat or growth-allowance rules in plain text.
For those topics, use the NFHS summaries and the school’s approved record. This page does not state a Montana body-fat percentage, because no MHSA document read for it gives one.
The national certification rules are summarized separately. Read weight certification.
How should Montana hosts and families use the chart?
A host running a school-based Montana event can enter the two lists above exactly. For open and youth events, state which list applies, since the MHSA list covers school competition.
Smart Wrestler hosts choose their weight classes when they create an event. Keep the girls’ and boys’ lists separate and let the school’s coach resolve any entry that does not match.
