What counts as a takedown in wrestling?

A takedown starts from neutral and establishes control. Compare three-point folkstyle scoring with international action values and read T3 on a score sheet.

Quick answer

A takedown is a scoring action that begins from neutral and establishes control of the opponent under the event’s rules. It is worth three match points in current NFHS high-school and NCAA men’s folkstyle. Touching a knee, grabbing a leg or landing above someone does not by itself settle control. UWW freestyle and Greco-Roman assign action values using their own criteria, so three is not a universal wrestling value. The referee recognizes the completed action, the table records its recipient and points, and the bout continues or ends according to the rules.

How is a takedown different from a shot?

A shot is an attempt to attack; a takedown is an awarded scoring outcome. A wrestler can attempt several attacks without earning a score, and a counterattack can produce the eventual takedown for the opponent. The technical move name does not dictate who receives the points.

For spectators, start by asking whether the action began with neither wrestler in control. Then look for the referee’s recognition of control and point signal. Do not count every leg touch as a score. For table crews, the practical job is to identify the athlete awarded the action and enter the value appropriate to the selected style.

Old high-school videos often show two-point takedowns. That can be accurate for the video’s season while being wrong for today’s event. NFHS’s official 2024–25 interpretation confirms three points for a secured takedown, including the specified edge situation. A school scorekeeper should verify the current ruleset before using a familiar historic shorthand.

Start from neutral00
A earns a takedown30
B earns an escape31
B later earns a takedown from neutral34

The second takedown belongs to B, even though A led earlier. B’s escape is a separate one-point transition and the later attack begins from neutral. This log explains why “two takedowns happened” is insufficient to reconstruct the score without athlete identities and the action order.

T3 or T-3 is a common paper notation for a three-point takedown. It records bout points, not a three-point dual decision. A wrestler can score several takedowns and still win or lose by a different final result. Preserve both the action history and the official finish.

What happens with a takedown near the boundary?

The referee applies the current inbounds and control standards. A takedown can be awarded at the edge; the NFHS interpretation specifically addresses that situation. The scorer should not reverse the official’s award merely because the athletes look close to or beyond the painted line from the table’s angle.

A restart and a score are separate pieces of information. If action stops, confirm whether points were awarded before assuming the total remains unchanged. Record a correction against the disputed action while the official can clarify it, rather than adjusting an unrelated later award to make the scoreboard look plausible.

What are some common moves that can lead to a takedown?

USA Wrestling’s introductory curriculum names the single leg, double leg, snap-and-spin and several upper-body attacks. These are movement families that can create a scoring opportunity, not automatic point awards. A legal attack must still meet the style’s scoring conditions, and Greco-Roman restricts the use of legs differently from freestyle or folkstyle.

Use a coach’s supervised demonstration to learn the action. This page explains how to read a result and a table log; it does not teach a throw or certify that a named move is legal in every position. Smart Wrestler’s live scoring records the awarded action, while its style setting must match the event the official is administering.

Frequently asked questions

How many points is a takedown in high-school wrestling?

Three under the current NFHS scoring rules; older seasons may show two.

Does grabbing a leg count as a takedown?

Not by itself. The action must establish the control and other conditions required by the event’s rules.

Is a takedown worth three points in freestyle?

Do not assume that. UWW action values depend on the completed action and its criteria.

What does T3 mean?

A takedown recorded as three match points for the indicated wrestler in a folkstyle scoring log.
