What is grand amplitude?

By the Smart Wrestler team · Written from hosting and scoring the events this software runs · Updated 2026-10-19

Grand amplitude describes a controlled international throw. Learn the UWW definition, danger-position distinction and why height alone does not fix the award.

Quick answer

Grand amplitude is a UWW classification for a controlled throw that completely lifts the opponent from ground contact and carries them through a broad sweeping airborne arc to the mat. The action’s score also depends on how it is completed, including whether it places the defender directly and immediately in danger. It is not a universal nickname for any high lift or an instruction to add force. School folkstyle uses its own scoring and safety rules. Such techniques require qualified instruction and appropriate progression.

What elements make the classification more than height?

UWW’s January 2026 definition includes full separation from the ground, control and the broad airborne trajectory. A jump, an opponent hopping on one foot or an uncontrolled fall does not establish the complete definition. The referee evaluates the action that actually occurred.

This is a viewing and terminology reference, not a throwing tutorial. A novice should learn safe movement, control and responses through a qualified instructor before attempting advanced actions. A spectacular replay can omit the preparation and partner experience that made the original action possible.

Why does the landing affect the point value?

UWW’s action-value provisions distinguish a grand-amplitude action that places the opponent directly and immediately in danger from one that does not. The rules also address lifts from par terre and different finishing positions. A spectator should not award five merely because the opponent was airborne.

ElementQuestion to watch
LiftDid the defender lose all ground contact?
Control and arcWas the defined action maintained?
FinishWas there direct and immediate danger?
Boundary and legalityWas the action valid under the full rules?

The referee’s final award resolves those questions for the score table.

How does this differ from a folkstyle slam question?

A slam concerns an illegal action involving unnecessary force under the applicable definition. Grand amplitude describes a particular international trajectory and control relationship. The terms answer different questions and should not be treated as opposites where one automatically proves the absence of the other.

School and college safety decisions have their own reference. Read the slam definition.

When an official stops a developing unsafe position, wrestlers must stop immediately. Continuing after the whistle to complete a visually impressive finish defeats the purpose of the safety instruction.

What should a commentator or scorer say?

Use the actual action value and result the officials confirm. A descriptive phrase such as “big throw” can help a spectator recognize the exchange but cannot replace the score. If review changes the award, wait for the confirmed result before entering a final method.

  1. Identify freestyle or Greco-Roman.
  2. Watch the whole action rather than a single airborne frame.
  3. Confirm the awarded value and any continuing exposure.
  4. Record the official final score and method separately.

In Smart Wrestler, a technique nickname should not generate extra points beyond the official action record. The same visual excitement can accompany different valid awards.

Frequently asked questions

Does every high throw earn five points?

No. UWW classification, finish, danger position and the full rules determine the award.

Can grand amplitude occur from par terre?

The current UWW rules address actions and lifts from standing and par terre, with the applicable action-value distinctions.

Is this a school folkstyle scoring category?

School folkstyle has its own scoring framework. Do not import an international value by nickname.

Should beginners practice it from a written description?

Use qualified instruction and a progression appropriate to the athlete and partner. This page is a recognition guide.
