North Carolina wrestling weight classes from the October 2026 NCHSAA handbook: 14 men’s and 12 women’s classes, plus growth-allowance limits.
Quick answer
North Carolina’s 2026–27 NCHSAA handbook lists fourteen men’s wrestling classes from 106 through 285 pounds and twelve women’s classes from 100 through 235. The women’s sequence includes 107 and 114, so it is not the fourteen-class girls’ chart used in some states. School classifications and the wrestler’s weight category are separate. Use the handbook list together with the approved minimum and date-specific school record; the growth allowance does not authorize an athlete to enter below the established minimum class.
Which NCHSAA weight classes are listed?
The NCHSAA handbook updated October 6, 2026 gives the lists in its wrestling section. The handbook calls the competitions Men’s and Women’s Wrestling; the rows below retain the school-level distinction.
| Competition | Nominal classes |
|---|---|
| Boys high school | 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215, 285 |
| Girls high school | 100, 107, 114, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 165, 185, 235 |
What does the NCHSAA growth-allowance example teach?
The handbook explains that an athlete whose established minimum class is 113 cannot use the two-pound allowance to become eligible for 106 simply because the athlete’s calculated minimum weight is 107.5. The approved class remains a separate condition from the adjusted scale limit.
This is an eligibility example, not advice to reduce weight. Coaches should consult the official athlete record and the current date. If the record does not support a proposed entry, resolve that through the authorized process rather than asking the athlete to make a lower number.
Why do school classifications not answer the weight question?
NCHSAA’s school classification structure determines which schools share a competition pathway. The weight list determines the categories wrestled within the applicable competition. A classification label cannot be substituted for 120, 132 or another bodyweight category.
For a public event listing, include both pieces of information where relevant. Families should be able to identify the correct competition before opening a weight bracket. A search result for a similarly named championship may describe a different classification or a previous year.
What should a women’s roster import check?
Look for values that belong to a fourteen-class girls’ chart, such as 105 or 110. The NCHSAA women’s twelve-class row begins 100, 107 and 114 and includes 152, 165 and 185 at the upper end. Importing a neighboring state’s preset can therefore create several invalid categories at once.
- Select the women’s school division explicitly.
- Compare all twelve class labels with the handbook.
- Match the school’s approved record to the event date.
- Clarify conflicting entries before publishing brackets.
How can hosts keep the handbook and registration aligned?
Attach or link the season’s instructions in the invitation and assign one coach-facing contact for questions. Treat a measured weight, a nominal class and an adjusted weigh-in limit as separate pieces of information. Combining them into one ambiguous field makes later checking harder.
Smart Wrestler’s event setup should reflect the published competition, including separate divisions. Review the host guide.
Before the first mat assignment, inspect the final entries for unsupported class numbers and missing division labels. Contact the responsible school about corrections so families receive one consistent bracket rather than a series of unexplained changes during check-in.
Frequently asked questions
Is 120 a North Carolina wrestling class?
Yes. It appears in both cited school lists, while the surrounding men’s and women’s sequences differ.
How many women’s classes does NCHSAA list?
Twelve in the October 2026 version of the 2026–27 handbook, from 100 to 235.
Can the allowance lower an athlete’s minimum class?
The handbook specifically says it cannot be used to descend below the established minimum class.
Does a school classification describe bodyweight?
No. School classification and an individual wrestler’s weight category answer different competition questions.
