What are the MAWA wrestling weight classes?

By the Smart Wrestler team · Written from hosting and scoring the events this software runs · Updated 2026-10-19

MAWA wrestling weight classes from an official 2026 district flyer, with seven divisions, maximum weights and guidance for checking the next season.

Quick answer

MAWA publishes division and weight information in its tournament flyers. The official Fauquier district flyer for March 14, 2026 lists Bantam, Midget, Junior, Intermediate, Advanced, Elite and Open divisions with distinct birth-year bands and maximums. This page reproduces that dated reference in pounds; it is not a claim that the same birth years apply in 2027. For a new entry, use the flyer for the actual district and season, including its advancement, weigh-in and eligibility instructions.

Notice that Elite begins at 111 while Advanced begins at 93. The two oldest youth rows cannot be treated as the same chart with a different age label. The final limit is also not an unrestricted heavyweight category.

How do you use a dated MAWA chart correctly?

Use it to interpret that season’s entry or archived bracket. A wrestler born in 2014 belongs in the Junior birth-year band shown on the cited 2026 flyer. That historical observation does not establish the wrestler’s 2027 division. Moving the calendar forward without a new flyer can produce an off-by-one-year entry error.

Keep the flyer date visible when sharing the table with a family. A cropped screenshot containing only numbers can outlive the season and circulate as if it were current. Send the actual event document along with the athlete’s proposed division.

Is MAWA the same chart as PIAA school wrestling?

No. MAWA’s age bands and tournament structure differ from Pennsylvania school varsity and junior-high competition. A familiar school class such as 120 may appear in one MAWA division but not another. The organization governing the event determines the list, not the school where the wrestler trains.

For a school entry, consult the separate state list. Read Pennsylvania school classes.

What should you ask before entering a district tournament?

  1. Confirm the current district flyer and competition date.
  2. Check the complete birth-year band rather than only a division nickname.
  3. Read the selected weight and its maximum exactly.
  4. Check the event’s advancement and later-round entry instructions.
  5. Verify the weigh-in window and the registration contact.

Do not assume that a previous district’s administrative instructions apply to another location. Venue access, entry deadlines and check-in details are operational facts that can change independently of the weight chart.

How should a coach organize several MAWA entries?

Keep one working list with athlete, birth year, division, weight and district. Review it against the actual flyer before submitting entries. If a parent reports only “Junior 120,” confirm both season and birth year rather than treating the nickname as complete eligibility information.

For a separately hosted Smart Wrestler event, use the organizer’s stated division setup. This reference does not imply that Smart Wrestler operates MAWA’s district registration or certifies qualification. A useful published bracket needs the correct division labels and confirmed participants, with any governing decisions handled by the responsible organization.

Frequently asked questions

Does this table establish 2027 MAWA weights?

No. It is explicitly the official March 14, 2026 Fauquier district reference. Use a published 2027 flyer for a 2027 entry.

Is 120 a MAWA weight class?

It appears in several rows of the cited flyer, including Junior and Intermediate. Always pair the number with the correct division and season.

Is MAWA heavyweight unlimited?

The cited flyer gives maximums, including 93 for Bantam and 295 for Open. A maximum must not be ignored.

Can I use a PIAA junior-high division for MAWA?

No. School junior-high classes and MAWA birth-year divisions are different frameworks.
