How does NCAA men’s wrestling scoring work?

NCAA men’s wrestling scoring explained: takedowns, near falls, riding time, dual results and tournament points, with a worked seven-minute bout example.
Quick answer
NCAA men’s wrestling uses three-point takedowns, one-point escapes, two-point reversals and ordinary near-fall awards of two, three or four points. A wrestler with at least one minute of net riding-time advantage can earn one additional point at the authorized end-of-period stage. Regulation is seven minutes across periods of three, two and two minutes. Match points determine the bout; dual team points and individual-tournament team scoring are separate systems. This page follows the 2025–26 and 2026–27 men’s book, not the separate women’s collegiate competition rules.
Which points belong on the college bout scoreboard?
| Action | Value | Recording distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Takedown | 3 | Award to the athlete who establishes the recognized action. |
| Escape | 1 | The opponent loses control under the rule. |
| Reversal | 2 | The defensive wrestler gains control. |
| Ordinary near fall | 2, 3 or 4 | One applicable award for the counted situation. |
| Net riding-time advantage | 1 | At least one minute, awarded at the authorized stage. |
The ordinary table excludes special injury and penalty situations. The official may award an additional or different point under a specific provision. Keep that call distinct so a later review can identify why the total changed instead of labeling every increment as a standard action.
How is the riding-time point calculated?
The point uses net advantage: one wrestler’s accumulated control time minus the opponent’s. In a fictional regulation bout, A controls for 1:35 and B for 0:20. A’s net advantage is 1:15, which exceeds a minute. If A instead controls 1:10 and B 0:20, the net is 0:50 and does not meet the threshold.
Do not add the point the instant the display first reaches 1:00; later control can change the net. The current book permits the earned point no sooner than the end of the third period and at its specified overtime stages. It also addresses rear-standing stalling situations in which control time should not keep accumulating. A dedicated timekeeper must follow the official’s procedure.
What does a worked college scoring example show?
| Award | A | B |
|---|---|---|
| A takedown | 3 | 0 |
| B escape | 3 | 1 |
| B takedown | 3 | 4 |
| A escape | 4 | 4 |
| A has an eligible 1:15 net riding-time advantage at the end | 5 | 4 |
This example shows why a spectator can see a level action score before the final riding-time award. It does not describe a real athlete or a prediction. The table should confirm the time record and the official finish before marking the bout complete. A point added from the riding-time rule is different from an unexplained manual adjustment.
How do NCAA dual points differ from match points?
| Finish | Winning team points |
|---|---|
| Decision | 3 |
| Major decision | 4 |
| Technical fall | 5 |
| Fall, default, forfeit or disqualification | 6 |
The current men’s book gives five for a technical fall. Do not reuse an obsolete chart that splits the value based on whether near-fall points were scored. A 5–4 bout decision contributes three to the dual total, not five. In an individual tournament, advancement, placement and bonus points form another calculation, so the dual table cannot be pasted into that scoreboard.
What should a college table check before finalizing the result?
- Confirm the current men’s rulebook and bout identities.
- Check the seven-minute regulation structure and any authorized overtime phase.
- Keep action scores, cautions and net riding time independently readable.
- Resolve video-review or correction issues through the official procedure.
- Record the actual finish and then update the correct team-scoring system.
Smart Wrestler’s public score is a view of the event record, not a substitute for NCAA-required timing, staffing or review arrangements. Hosts should rehearse their configured competition with the referee and table lead. If the event needs a rule feature outside its configured workflow, resolve that before inviting a crew to rely on it.
For operational table duties rather than a scoring reference, use the scorekeeper guide.
Frequently asked questions
How do you count points in college wrestling?
Use the individual action values, applicable penalties and authorized riding-time award, then record the completed bout separately from team points.
How many points is a college takedown?
Three in current NCAA men’s wrestling.
Does one minute on the riding-time clock immediately add a point?
No. It is net advantage, and the point is awarded only at the stages authorized by the rule.
Do NCAA women use this same scoring reference?
No. This page is specifically the NCAA men’s book; use the separate women’s competition rules.
