Wisconsin wrestling weight classes

Wisconsin wrestling weight classes from the 2026–27 WIAA regulations: boys’ 14 and girls-only 12, plus junior-high and JV distinctions.

Quick answer

Wisconsin’s 2026–27 WIAA season regulations list fourteen boys’ wrestling weight classes from 106 to 285 pounds and twelve girls-only classes from 100 to 235. The girls-only sequence includes 107 and 114 rather than 105 and 110. The regulations also treat certain junior-varsity and middle-level competition differently, so a varsity chart should not be treated as a universal Wisconsin youth list. Check the school’s approved athlete record, actual competition level and event instructions before entering.

Which WIAA weight classes are listed?

Rule 15 of WIAA’s current season regulations prints the official boys’ and girls-only categories. The list below retains the nominal labels without a growth allowance.

Why does the phrase girls-only matter?

WIAA explicitly labels the twelve-class list for girls-only competition. A registration form should retain the actual competition designation rather than combine all wrestlers with the same number into one ambiguous division. The rulebook, school and event determine the applicable participation framework.

For coaches receiving a visiting team’s roster, look for a fourteen-class girls’ sequence. Values such as 105, 110 and 115 can signal that the wrong adoption was used. Ask the school to confirm the intended eligible entries before changing any numbers.

Can junior-varsity competition use a reduced number of classes?

The current regulations describe a provision for reducing NFHS classes at JV dual meets with both schools’ approval. That is a specific local competition provision. It does not change the varsity state-series chart or establish a new statewide youth adoption.

If schools use the JV provision, communicate the agreed format before arrival and state how athletes will be matched. A family should not discover at check-in that a familiar class label is absent because staff never explained the event’s format.

What does the middle-level provision say?

The regulations leave middle-level competition weights to school discretion and recommend providing matches for the available participants. That differs from simply copying the high-school table downward to every younger athlete. Coaches still need an appropriate, agreed competition plan.

  1. Identify varsity, JV or middle-level competition.
  2. Read the provision that actually governs that level.
  3. Agree on any permitted local format before inviting teams.
  4. Keep school-approved athlete eligibility separate from the event’s grouping choices.

How should Wisconsin hosts publish a clear class list?

State the competition level, boys’ or girls-only designation and exact offered categories. Where a permitted local format differs, explain it in the invitation rather than hiding it behind a generic “Wisconsin weights” heading. Keep the governing season visible so archived instructions are not mistaken for current rules.

When using Smart Wrestler, review the division setup and sample entries before registration opens. Read host setup guidance.

For an entry question, contact the responsible school coach with the specific event and athlete record. Do not ask a table volunteer to calculate a new minimum or make a participation exception from a printed chart. Correct entries before bracketing so families see a stable, understandable competition.
