South Dakota wrestling weight classes from the SDHSAA handbook revised July 2026: fourteen boys’ and fourteen girls’ classes and weigh-in limits.
Quick answer
South Dakota’s SDHSAA wrestling handbook, revised July 2026, lists fourteen boys’ weight classes from 106 to 285 pounds, marked as new for 2026, and fourteen girls’ classes from 100 to 235. It also says South Dakota no longer sets a minimum weight that wrestlers must reach to wrestle 106 or 100. Boys compete in Class A and Class B; girls have one class. For 2026–27 and 2027–28, girls may have up to seventeen weigh-ins instead of fifteen.
Which SDHSAA weight classes are listed?
The handbook’s “Weight Classification” section names the classes for individual competition and, for boys, for team duals.
| Competition | Classes | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Boys individual and team duals | 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215, 285 | 14 |
| Girls individual | 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 155, 170, 190, 235 | 14 |
The boys’ line carries the note “New 2026.” A family using an older South Dakota chart should check which season it describes.
What changed about the lightest classes?
The handbook states that South Dakota no longer has a minimum weight that wrestlers must reach to wrestle at 106 or 100. The weight-certification section says the state follows the Optimal Performance Calculator format for weights during the season and points readers to additional regulations on the SDHSAA website.
This page does not repeat the certification formula, because the handbook defers the full regulations to a separate release. Use the SDHSAA site for the current figures before relying on any summary.
How do boys’ and girls’ classifications differ?
Boys’ wrestling and team duals are divided into Class A, for schools with an ADM (grades 9–11) of 225 and above, and Class B, for all others. The handbook says there is only one class for girls. The class a school competes in is separate from the bodyweight class an athlete enters.
A parent tracking a bracket should therefore record both pieces of information. “Class A, 150” and “girls, 150” point to different brackets.
What weigh-in limits apply?
Male individual wrestlers are restricted to a maximum of fifteen weigh-ins regardless of the number of duals or tournaments or the level on which they occur. For two years, 2026–27 and 2027–28, female individual wrestlers may have up to seventeen. The handbook gives the reason as many girls’ duals being decided by forfeits, which limits the matches girls can wrestle.
No wrestler may represent the school in more than one weight class in any meet or wrestle more than six matches in a day of competition, excluding forfeits. Up to three “combination” weigh-ins, for events that mix individual brackets with dual competition, count as one of the allowed weigh-ins.
How does state seeding use the region meet?
Region meets are completed before the state meet. At the state individual seed meeting, ten wrestlers in each weight class are seeded, and each region champion is guaranteed one of those top-ten seeds. Fifth-place region finishers can fill byes in a state bracket when a region lacks wrestlers.
Hosts running a South Dakota qualifier should publish the region, class and weight together so families can see which bracket feeds the state meet.
