How is freestyle wrestling scored?

By the Smart Wrestler team · Written from hosting and scoring the events this software runs · Updated 2026-10-12

A table worker's view of freestyle: which actions score, how long a bout runs, and what ends it early.

Quick answer

Freestyle wrestling scores 1 point for a step-out, 2 points for a takedown or exposure, 4 points for a throw from the feet to a danger position and 5 points for a grand amplitude throw. A bout is two 3 minute periods with a 30 second break, and it ends early on a fall or when one wrestler leads by 10 points, called technical superiority. A tied score is decided by the highest value move, then fewest cautions, then the last points scored.

Which actions score points in freestyle?

Freestyle scoring actions and point values
ActionPointsWhat the table records
Step-out1Opponent steps out of bounds
Takedown2Basic takedown from the feet to control
Exposure or turn2Turning the opponent's back toward the mat
Takedown to the back4Throw from the feet to a danger position
Grand amplitude throw5High, arching throw that lands the opponent in danger

The two top values are the ones tables most often argue about. Official rulebooks score feet-to-danger actions at four points and treat a grand amplitude throw as a five point action, so the referee's signal decides which one goes on the sheet. The scorekeeper records what the referee shows and does not judge the move.

How long is a freestyle bout?

A freestyle bout is two periods of three minutes with a 30 second break between them, and the wrestler with more points after both periods wins. Points come only from scoring actions, and a passive wrestler can be warned and then put on a 30 second activity clock.

Smart Wrestler's freestyle set has no major decision category, so a win by fewer than 10 points is recorded as an ordinary decision. Team points also differ from folkstyle, where a pin is worth six: the defaults for freestyle are 3 for a decision and 5 for every other win, and a host using the freestyle format should confirm that scale against the event rules.

How are tied freestyle matches decided?

  1. The wrestler who scored the highest-value move wins.
  2. If that is level, the wrestler with fewer cautions wins.
  3. If that is level, the wrestler who scored the last points wins.

Because the criteria depend on actions rather than on extra time, the scoring table's action log is what settles a close bout. Every action is time-stamped in the audit trail, which makes the last-points check an easy lookup instead of an argument.

How does Smart Wrestler score freestyle?

Choose freestyle as the tournament style and the scoring screen switches to the freestyle action set shown above: one, two, four and five point buttons, a two period clock with the 30 second break, penalty steps for cautions with a fourth penalty ending in disqualification, and a passivity warning followed by the 30 second activity clock. The match ends automatically at a 10 point lead and records the result with the score and time on the bracket.

Setting the style and generating brackets for a freestyle event is covered in the live scoring feature page.
