What are the NFHS wrestling rule changes for 2026-27?

By the Smart Wrestler team · Written from hosting and scoring the events this software runs · Updated 2026-10-12

The changes that reach a tournament table, a weigh-in line or a bracket, with what each means for hosts and coaches.

Quick answer

The NFHS 2026-27 wrestling changes raise the minimum body fat percentage for female wrestlers from 12 to 19 percent, shorten injury recovery time to two minutes in listed cases of illegal contact, require a specific stalling call when wrestling stops for going out of bounds, and state that byes do not count as a match. NFHS also modified the weigh-in process and encouraged team-based weigh-ins where practical. Check your state association for how it applies them.

What does the female minimum body fat change mean?

NFHS raised the minimum body fat percentage for female wrestlers from 12 to 19 percent, effective with the 2026-27 season, and the committee said the change gives girls a safer margin when pursuing a lower weight class. A wrestler who planned to cut to a lower class should confirm her certification with her state association before registering for it.

The girls' class lists a state may use are on the high school weight classes page.

How should hosts handle byes now?

NFHS now states that a bye does not count as a match, and byes do not count toward the daily or two-day match limits or toward a wrestler's record. For a host this means a wrestler who draws a bye in round one has not wrestled a match for limit or record purposes, and a team scorekeeper should not credit a bye as a win. Smart Wrestler already excludes byes from wrestler records and team points, so a bye never appears as a win or a match in records or standings.

How byes are placed in a bracket is explained in what a bye in wrestling is.

What changed for stalling, bleeding and weigh-ins?

When neutral wrestling stops because a wrestler went out of bounds, the referee must now make a specific call, either stalling for leaving the area or wrestling action taking place. This separates edge-of-mat stalling from traditional stalling, so a table that tracks stalling warnings should enter them only when the referee names the stalling call. Separately, a wrestler injured or bleeding from an illegal hold, unnecessary roughness, unsportsmanlike conduct or an opponent's false start in the neutral position gets two minutes of recovery time instead of five.

On the weigh-in side, NFHS modified the weigh-in process in Rule 4-5-1 and encouraged team-based weigh-ins where practical. A host that can weigh a whole team at once, for example with one checked-in list per team, saves time on a busy morning, but the exact procedure comes from the rule book and the state association.

Windows, allowances and missed weight are covered in the wrestling weigh-in rules guide.
