A bye in wrestling is an empty slot in a bracket. When the number of wrestlers in a weight class does not fill the bracket size (4, 8, 16, or 32), the extra slots are byes, and the wrestler drawn against a bye advances to the next round without a match. Byes are given to the highest seeds first. A bye is not a win: in most team scoring systems, advancement points for a bye are earned only if the wrestler wins their next match.
Why do byes exist?
Elimination brackets come in powers of two. Eleven wrestlers cannot pair evenly, so they go into a 16 slot bracket and five slots are empty. Rather than leave a wrestler waiting, the empty slot is a bye and the wrestler paired with it moves straight to round two. Round robin formats do not use byes in the same way; everyone wrestles everyone, though an odd numbered group means one wrestler sits out each round.
Who gets a bye?
The top seeds. Seeding places byes against the 1 seed first, then the 2 seed, and so on, on the logic that the wrestlers most likely to advance skip a round anyway and no competitive match is lost. Does a bye count as a win?
On the individual record, no; a bye is not a match. In team scoring, most systems award the advancement points for the bye round only if the wrestler wins the following match, so a bye followed by a loss earns nothing. Check your event's published team scoring rules.
What should a wrestler do during a bye?
Watch the two wrestlers who will produce their next opponent, stay warm, eat and hydrate, and check the bout board or their phone for the next bout number. The next match may come sooner than expected if the first round is short. Do byes exist in double elimination?
Yes, on both sides. Consolation brackets also use byes when uneven numbers drop down.
