What are the standard wrestling bracket sizes?
- 4 man: two semifinals and a final; often run as a round robin instead so everyone gets three matches.
- 8 man: quarterfinals, semifinals, final. Seven championship matches; consolation adds a third and fifth place path.
- 16 man: four rounds on the championship side. Fifteen championship matches; consolation roughly doubles it.
- 32 man: five rounds; used for large open tournaments and state series events.
- Odd fields (5, 6, 7, 9 to 15) use the next size up with byes.
How are byes placed on a bracket template?
A bye is an empty slot: the wrestler drawn against it advances without wrestling. Templates place byes against the top seeds first, so a 6 man field in an 8 man bracket gives the 1 and 2 seeds a first round bye and the other four wrestle in. This is the same rule a generator applies, except the generator does it for every weight class at once and re-does it when the field changes at weigh ins.
How many matches does each template produce?
- Single elimination: entrants minus one to crown a champion (8 man: 7; 16 man: 15; 32 man: 31).
- Single elimination with third and fifth place: roughly entrants plus a half again (8 man: 11).
- Double elimination: roughly double single elimination (8 man: about 14; 16 man: about 30).
- Round robin: n times n minus one, divided by two (4 man: 6; 5 man: 10; 6 man: 15; 8 man: 28).

When does a template stop being enough?
A template is a picture of one bracket. A tournament is thirty brackets that change on the morning: a late scratch, a wrestler who missed weight and moved up, a class with one entrant that has to be merged. Every change on paper means re-drawing byes and re-seeding by hand. A generator regenerates all of it in seconds while brackets are in preview, then keeps the bracket live so mat queues and family phones follow it. Is a 5 man bracket a thing?
Some systems use a 5 man round robin (10 matches). In elimination formats, 5 entrants go into an 8 man bracket with 3 byes.
How are wrestlebacks drawn on a template?
Losers from the championship side drop to specific consolation slots, arranged so wrestlers who already met do not meet again until as late as possible. Generators handle this placement automatically.
