A team dual is not an individual bracket with extra math. Two teams meet head to head, each weight class scores team points, and the dual winner advances.

What is a team dual?
A dual is the team version of a match. Instead of every wrestler chasing only individual placement, each weight class is one scoring chance for the team. Folkstyle high school duals are the familiar picture: 14 (or a locally defined set of) weights, two teams, one bout per weight, running total on the scoreboard.
A team duals tournament stacks those duals into a bracket or pool. Saturday is not “who places first at 132.” Saturday is “which team won the dual, then which team won the tournament.” Individuals still wrestle and still have records; the unit that advances is the team.
How are lineups and weight classes handled?
Each coach submits a lineup: one wrestler per contested weight, plus extras who may not be in this dual. If one team has a wrestler and the other does not, that weight is usually a forfeit and the filled side receives forfeit team points. If both teams are empty, the weight is a wash: no bout, no points.
Weigh-ins still happen before duals lock. A wrestler who misses weight cannot fill that class. Smart Wrestler records the weigh-in on the same roster the coach uses to set the lineup, so the dual card and the scale are not two spreadsheets.

How is a dual scored?
Match scoring inside the bout is familiar folkstyle or freestyle scoring. The dual total uses the win method. Typical folkstyle team points, which hosts should confirm against their rule set, are:
- Decision: 3 team points
- Major decision: 4 team points
- Technical fall: 5 team points
- Pin, forfeit, default, or disqualification: 6 team points
The dual winner is the team with more team points after every weight has been wrestled or forfeited. Ties may be broken by criteria the host publishes (most pins, most team points from falls, first points scored, and so on). Do not invent tie-breakers at the table.
How does a team tournament bracket advance?
Each dual produces one winning team. That team moves forward in a team bracket the same way a wrestler moves forward in an individual bracket. Pools work the same way as individual pool play: every team duals the other teams in the pool, then pool records seed a placement round or a championship dual.
Individuals do not “wrestle back” as a team unless the format is a true dual consolation. A wrestler whose team loses the quarterfinal dual is done for the team trophy even if that wrestler won their bout. Hosts who also want individual medals need a separate individual format, not a duals bracket.
What order do the weights wrestle?
Many events run lowest weight to highest. Some draw a starting weight and rotate. Duals on multiple mats may split the card (lower weights on mat 1, upper weights on mat 2) so the dual finishes faster. The order must be posted before the dual starts so coaches can warm the right kids.
