Folkstyle vs freestyle wrestling tournaments

By Smart Wrestler · Updated 2026-09-14

Same sport, different ruleset, different Saturday. Hosts must pick one per division. Families should know which they registered for.

Quick answer

Folkstyle is the school-season style in the United States: riding time or top/bottom control, escapes, and near falls matter. Freestyle is the international style: exposure and activity are scored differently, and periods and passivity calls change. A tournament can run both styles on one day only if the host configures each division with the correct rules. Smart Wrestler stores style and period length on the event so scoring matches what the referee is calling.

What is folkstyle?

Folkstyle is what most US youth, middle school, and high school duals and tournaments use. Control on top is a feature: escapes and reversals score, near falls reward turning the opponent, and stalling is called to keep the match moving. Periods are often 2-2-2 or a youth-modified set.

What is freestyle?

Freestyle (and Greco-Roman for upper body only) is the Olympic family. Scoring emphasizes takedowns and exposure. There is no folkstyle escape in the same way, and passivity / activity clocks replace some stalling mechanics. USA Wrestling events may require USA Bracketing; independent freestyle opens can still run on Smart Wrestler if the host sets the style.

Can one tournament run both?

Yes, if divisions are labeled and scored separately. Do not mix a folkstyle youth division and a freestyle open on the same mat without posting the style on the bout. Period length should be set per division so the timer matches the rulesheet.

How does software need to change?

The scorekeeper buttons and win methods must match the style. A folkstyle table that cannot record an escape will invent totals. Smart Wrestler’s scoring engine follows the event’s configured style and period length, then writes the audit trail the bracket reads.

Frequently asked questions

Is high school wrestling folkstyle or freestyle?

US high school duals and most high school tournaments are folkstyle. Freestyle and Greco show up in USA Wrestling and off-season events.

Do pins exist in both styles?

Yes. A fall still ends the match. The path to getting there and the other scoring actions differ.

Can Smart Wrestler run a freestyle tournament?

Yes. Set the style and period length when you create the event. USA Wrestling regionals and nationals still use USA Bracketing when required.

Which style should a first youth tournament use?

Folkstyle, unless you are explicitly hosting a USA Wrestling-style event. That is what most local clubs practice.
