What does on deck mean in wrestling?
By the Smart Wrestler team · Written from hosting and scoring the events this software runs · Updated 2026-09-27
It is the call that means you are next on that mat. Warm up now, stand near the table, and be ready when the current bout ends.
Quick answer
On deck means your wrestling match is next on a specific mat after the bout currently being wrestled. You should be warmed up, near that mat, and ready to report as soon as it ends. It is later than in the hole (usually two matches away) and earlier than up now, which means report to the table immediately.
How does this connect to the event workflow?
A live mat queue helps families time their walk to the mat. See mat call notifications.
What is the mat call sequence?
Most tournaments use three spoken calls so wrestlers do not crowd the scorer or vanish into the bleachers. In the hole is the early warning. On deck is next. Up now (also up to wrestle or on the mat) means the table is waiting on you.
- In the hole: usually two matches away on that mat. Start moving and warming up.
- On deck: the current bout is the only match ahead of yours. Be at the mat.
- Up now: report. The previous bout is over or the table has called you.
How is on deck different from in the hole?
In the hole is prepare. On deck is next. Treating on deck like in the hole is how wrestlers miss bouts after a 20-second pin. Treating on deck like up now crowds the table before the current match ends. If you only remember one rule: when you are on deck, you should be able to step to the table in seconds.
What should a wrestler do when called on deck?
- Confirm the mat number. On deck on mat 3 is the wrong place if your bout is mat 7.
- Finish the last warm-up, not a new long drill on the far wall.
- Check shoes, headgear, and singlet. Skin check should already be done.
- Stand near the table without blocking the scorer, referee, or the wrestlers who are competing.
- Watch the current bout. A pin or injury default can make you up now immediately.
How does Smart Wrestler use on deck alerts?
The live mat queue is visible in a phone browser for free. As scoring ends a bout, pairings move: in the hole, on deck, up to wrestle. Premium mat-call alerts can notify the wrestler, linked parent, and coach by name so nobody has to decode a paper bout board over the PA.
Frequently asked questions
Should I warm up when I am on deck?
Yes. On deck means the current match is the only match ahead of yours on that mat. You should already be warm from in the hole; this is last-second readiness.
Is on deck the same as up now?
No. On deck means next. Up now means report for the match. Do not wait for a second PA call if the table is looking at you.
How long do I have when I am on deck?
As long as the current bout lasts. That can be seconds after a pin or several minutes in overtime. Stay at the mat.
Does every tournament use the phrase on deck?
Most folkstyle events do. Dual meets may just run weight-class order. If the PA language is unclear, ask the table for bout number and mat.
